Panic at the Disco tries a different point of view
When Panic! at the Disco took the "!" out of their name, they also took the "!" out of their music.
Formerly flamboyant and androgynous, with a circuslike tinge to their music and performance, the young Las Vegas foursome has thrown away the makeup; fired the jugglers and the clowns; and tried to be more mature on their sophomore CD, "Pretty. Odd."
So far, the fans are not buying it.
Panic's debut album, 2005's "A Fever You Can't Sweat Out," sold 1.67 million units, according to Billboard, thanks mostly to the hit single — and MTV Video of the Year — "I Write Sins Not Tragedies." But the new album, after debuting at No. 2 in Billboard in March, has slipped down to No. 76 in just eight weeks. The one single released from it, "Nine in the Afternoon," never even made it into the Top 50.
Maybe they'll redeem themselves in concert, as they headline the 2008 Honda Civic Tour, playing Saturday night at the Paramount. The value-priced, band-heavy show also includes fellow pop/rock groups Motion City Soundtrack, the Hush Sound and Phantom Planet.
Panic's new look and sound are inspired by guitarist and chief songwriter Ryan Ross' embrace of the '60s sounds of the Beatles, Bob Dylan and the Who. Some production work on the album was done at Abbey Road, the London studio made famous by the Beatles.
In addition to a softer, folk-
ier, '60s-influenced sound, Ross has also adopted a hippie look, with tie-dyed or flowered shirts, striped pants, Beatles boots and the like. Band members have grown their hair longer, and two of them are letting their beards grow. Baby-faced Ross and handsome lead singer Brendon Urie no longer do the playful, bisexual bit onstage that raised some eyebrows.
The band is going through a growing-up phase, and it might take a while for fans to catch up. Panic remains a solid, talented band with a gift for sunny songs and catchy hooks. They'll survive this bumpy patch.

R Kelly - Jurors In R Kelly Trial Shown Alleged Sex Tape
A video allegedly showing R Kelly involved in sex acts with an underage girl has been shown to jurors at his trial in Chicago.
Cook County prosecutor Shauna Boliker warned the jury they would see footage of an "underage child performing sex acts that you have never seen before".
But the R 'n' B star's legal team claims that the video depicts neither Kelly nor the alleged victim.
The I Believe I Can Fly star is accused of filming himself engaging in sex acts with a girl who prosecutors say may have been as young as 13 at the time.
Ms Boliker told the members of the jury they would have to see "the sex acts he commands her to do".
"Acts you have never seen before. Vile, disturbing and disgusting sex acts, actions that were choreographed, produced and starred in by Robert Kelly," she added.
However, Kelly's lawyer Sam Adam Jr described the tape as "at best a copy of a copy of a copy" and claimed that neither the FBI nor "a single witness" could conclusively identify his client as the man in the tape, according to the Associated Press news agency.
Mr Adam also pointed out that while Kelly has a "significant" coin-sized mole on his back - going so far as to show the jury pictures of the singer's blemish - the man in the footage does not appear to have a mole.
The alleged victim, now 23, testified before a grand jury in 2002 that she was not the girl in the videotape.
The trial, which has been repeatedly delayed, continues.

Opera isaac M. Singer Russell James Dewey Watson has completed a five-week course of irradiation to eradicate a recurrent encephalon tumor.
The 41-year-old singer, known as The Voice, described his treatment as "no take the air in the park".
Watson's managing director Giles Baxendale said: "He's finished his treatment only he doesn't know whether he is in the clear yet."
"He's doing intimately, he's a little tired, a number drained, simply he's well-being that it's finished."
Watson testament now accept to get regular scans to fix whether or not the discussion has been successful.
In a message on his web site, James Watson said: "I've had my moments under that car where I just wanted to stay the bloody thing and walk away."
"I'm not out of the woods nevertheless. I dearly wanted to maintain the side-effects to a minimum and I've been safekeeping myself equip and healthy as I stool, just I'm afraid they've caught up with me, and I don't mind admitting I've non been myself."
"I'm just now so lucky I've had friends, family unit, and of course my fans to serve me through; I truly don't think I could do this without the financial backing I've had," the vocaliser wrote.
Watson underwent operating theater to remove a brain tumor end October. It was his second gear operation on the neoplasm in 12 months.
